Carménère — one of Bordeaux’s original varieties, considered lost after phylloxera — is today exceedingly rare on the Right Bank, surviving in a handful of plots in Saint-Émilion and Pomerol. On the clay and ironstone soils, its low yields and late-ripening character make it a difficult but fascinating variety.
