Merlot from the Chilean Valle Central — a widely grown red variety in Chile’s central valleys — Maipo, Rapel, Colchagua, Curicó — on alluvial, clay and fertile loam soils — is the base of Chile’s accessible red wines. Long confused with Carmenere, Chilean Merlot has since been better identified and selected.
