Pineau d’Aunis in Saumur rouge — an autochthonous red variety of the Loire Valley, grown on the tufa and clay-limestone of the Saumurois region, rarely vinified as a single-variety red, more often in blends with Cabernet Franc — produces light, fruity reds that are always very characteristically peppery.
