Ruländer vin rouge tranquille
- Origin
- A natural mutation of Pinot Noir, originating in Burgundy. The name Ruländer comes from the German merchant Johann Seger Ruland, who rediscovered the grape variety in Speyer around 1711.
- Growing regions
- ~50,000–60,000 ha. Present mainly in Italy (Pinot Grigio), France (Alsace), Germany, USA (Oregon), New Zealand, Hungary, Slovenia, Romania.
- Also known as
- Pinot Gris, Grauburgunder, Pinot Grigio, Tokay d'Alsace (historical), Szürkebárát (Hungary), Malvoisie (certain regions)
Ruländer designates in Germany the rich and off-dry style of Pinot Gris, as opposed to the drier Grauburgunder style. It produces ample, unctuous and velvety wines with fine ageing potential.
